Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
DOW is one of seven affiliated organizations including the French Medecins du Monde. DOW sends several dozen volunteers into war-torn or disaster-stricken regions of the world every year. This organization is unique in that although it is not politically partisan, DOW does not hesitate to document and speak out about the human-rights abuses it encounters in it's relief efforts. Medical professionals must be US state licensed and board eligible / certified; MPH frequently needed. Except in emergency efforts, Doctors of the World requests that volunteers serve for at least a month in foreign posts. Ongoing medical relief projects include providing health care for homeless and neglected children in Russia, staffing a hospital in Chiapas, Mexico, and fighting tuberculosis in South Africa. Doctors of the World also runs a human rights clinic project in the United States, providing examinations and medical affidavits for torture survivors seeking political asylum. The organization relies on physicians in all specialties and does not accept medical students. It is helpful if volunteers speak the language of their host country. One month to 3 month length of service
